Card Recon - a curse or a boon ?

Posted On : Jun 09th 2014 by Rishi Aggarwal

Card Recon is a PCI compliance software tool used to perform cardholder data discovery on almost any type of storage location Card Recon will accurately scan files, network shares, emails, databases, memory, cloud storage and more to identify non-compliant storage of payment card numbers issued by major card schemes including American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB, MasterCard and Visa.

Card Recon

When a scan is complete Card Recon provides a simple and easy to read PCI Compliance report for your bank. Trusted in over 80 countries, Card Recon is the industry leading PCI DSS Software tool trusted by over 300 PCI Qualified Security Assessor (QSAs) as a reliable and effective way to establish assurance of compliant cardholder data storage practices.

This software tool scans all parts of a network to see where payment card data is stored. Often, companies find card details stored in unlikely and unknown places. Card Recon compiles a thorough report, and companies can then move to secure the data.

But unfortunately Cracked versions of Card Recon, a PCI compliance tool, have been found in malware & copy of commercial software via unauthorized means was obtained  it appears that Card Recon was being used for its intended purpose to find card numbers but for cybercriminals.

When Card Recon is scanning, it has to be able to separate 16-digit numbers and other random data it finds from valid 16-digit credit card numbers. Credit card numbers can be validated by using a checksum formula called the Luhn algorithm & it appears that Card Recon was being used for its intended purpose to find card numbers but for cybercriminals.
